Xabi Alonso has several difficult selection decisions to make before Chelsea travel to Brentford on Friday night.
Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Hull City provided another reminder that Chelsea’s attacking quality is currently being undermined by defensive instability.
Morgan Rogers gave the Blues an early lead, only for Mohamed Belloumi to score twice in six minutes before Joao Pedro rescued a point after half-time.
Chelsea’s official match report showed just how quickly a promising start turned into another chaotic Premier League afternoon.
Alonso’s response was particularly revealing.
The Chelsea head coach warned that his players cannot afford to be “soft” when danger develops after Hull’s first goal originated from a long clearance and two awkward bounces.
Now the question is how strongly that warning influences his team at Brentford.
Alonso warning puts Hato place under pressure
Chelsea started with Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill and Jorrel Hato as their three central defenders against Hull, with Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto operating as wing-backs.

Alonso replaced Hato with Pep Chavarria at half-time.
Importantly, the manager did not publicly blame the Dutch defender for the goal.

That still leaves him with a genuine Brentford decision.
Chavarria made a positive impact after coming on, while Chelsea are also moving closer to having another defensive option available.

Brentford are capable of turning matches into direct, physical contests built around aerial challenges and second balls.

Reece James and Romeo Lavia started together against Hull, but Moises Caicedo could change the entire balance of Alonso’s midfield if he is fit enough to return.
The Ecuador international has barely featured this season after aggravating a calf problem against Brighton.
Chelsea deliberately refused to risk another premature comeback against Hull.
Alonso confirmed in his latest official team-news update that Brentford would be the next fixture at which Caicedo could potentially return.
His availability would give Chelsea their strongest defensive midfielder.
Caicedo can compete for second balls, protect the spaces behind the wing-backs and provide the recovery speed Alonso needs when attacks break down.

Chelsea produced only 0.90 expected goals, compared with Hull’s 1.51, while the visitors also edged the shot count despite Alonso’s side dominating possession.

Chelsea can control the ball without controlling the dangerous moments.
In his post-match assessment, Alonso stressed the need for his players to maintain better distances, defend with more intensity and recognise danger earlier.
Friday therefore represents more than another Premier League fixture.
Whether Alonso changes Hato, adjusts Gusto’s role or restores Caicedo, his team needs to show it has understood the warning delivered after Hull.
