John Terry has urged Chelsea to rediscover the defensive basics after Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Hull City exposed familiar problems under Xabi Alonso.
The Blues led through Morgan Rogers after seven minutes, but Mohamed Belloumi struck twice before half-time. Joao Pedro rescued a point after the break, yet Chelsea’s official match report showed how a long goal-kick and a corner were enough to turn control into chaos.
Terry believes the answer starts with the simplest parts of defending.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, with his comments reported by The Independent, the former Chelsea captain urged Alonso’s players to “do the basics really well” and stressed that against teams using long balls, crosses and physical pressure, “you have to win those battles”.
Chelsea defensive record leaves Terry concerned
Chelsea have now conceded nine goals in their opening four Premier League matches and have gone 20 consecutive league games without a clean sheet.
ReadChelsea has already examined how the Hull draw extended that unwanted 65-year defensive run, but Terry’s intervention gives the problem a fresh focus.
The issue is not only shape or personnel.
Chelsea must defend first contacts, second balls, crosses and set-pieces with greater aggression.
That becomes particularly relevant before Friday’s trip to Brentford.
Alonso’s side sit fourth with seven points from their first four league matches, but Terry viewed the Hull draw as an opportunity missed and believes the derby is an important chance to respond before the international break.
ReadChelsea has also analysed how Chelsea can exploit Brentford tactically, but the first requirement will be matching the physical side of the contest.
Alonso can change his midfield, alter the back line or welcome injured players back.
Terry’s message is much simpler.
Before Chelsea can become the controlled, possession-dominant side Alonso wants, they must start winning the defensive battles that are currently costing them points.
