Following an abysmal offseason, a new rumor has linked the Denver Nuggets to a signing before training camps open that is sure to underwhelm fans.
This has been a summer to forget for Nuggets supporters. After being ousted in the opening round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves, expectations to improve the roster weren’t high because of the team’s bloated payroll. Although reports suggested the organization tried to offload some expensive contracts, they failed to do so.
Along with the frustration of having the same team as last year returning in 2026-27, franchise icon Nikola Jokic again pushed back the opportunity to sign a new max extension until next year. Creating new speculation that he is unsure if he wants to finish his career in Denver. Yet, that wasn’t the worst news of the summer.
Entering the offseason, there were fears they could lose talented, young two-way swingman Peyton Watson in free agency. Well, they did, as he took his talents to the Cleveland Cavaliers via a five-team sign-and-trade that netted the Nuggets an unprotected 2031 first-round pick, a 2032 second-round pick, and Julian Reese, whom they later waived.
Sure, they didn’t lose him for nothing, but they only got worse as a team with his departure.

With training camps set to open in a couple of weeks, the Nuggets are reportedly looking to add a specific player to the roster. However, the player they are looking to sign is unlikely to excite fans because he was also waived by his new team following the Watson sign-and-trade.
“The Nuggets have emerged as a team to watch in pursuit of Cam Whitmore,” NBA insider Marc Stein reports. “Whitmore, selected 20th overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, was recently waived by Cleveland after they acquired him as part of the five-team megatrade that landed Peyton Watson in Northeast Ohio.”
The former Villanova star entered the 2023 draft as one of the best pure shooters in that year’s class. However, he only played one season for the Wildcats and entered the NBA as a teenager. He probably could have used more seasoning in college.
After three seasons in the NBA, he has mainly been a back-end of the rotation player, averaging 10 points and three rebounds. However, he is still only 22 years old, so maybe Denver can get more out of him than the Houston Rockets did in his first two seasons.
