Heat, Knicks, Raptors reportedly in bidding war for $21M high-motor 7-year veteran, top free agent image
There are still free agents left on the market with only a few weeks remaining until teams report to training camp. The regular season is almost here, which is exciting, but there are still free agents yet to be signed.
One of them is veteran John Konchar. He was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves a couple of weeks ago.
“The Minnesota Timberwolves have traded Josh Green and cash to the Utah Jazz for Cody Williams and John Konchar, the teams announced Saturday. The Timberwolves are expected to keep Williams, the No. 10 pick in 2024, and waive-and-stretch Konchar, sources told ESPN. Saturday is the final day to waive a player and stretch out his guaranteed salary over multiple seasons," ESPN's Shams Charania wrote.
Minnesota was just trying to free up financial space to add Jonathan Kuminga. Once the trade was made official, the Timberwolves ended up releasing Konchar, allowing him to enter the free-agent market.
“The Timberwolves announce that they have just waived John Konchar," NBA insider Brett Siegel wrote.
Konchar has taken his time through the process and is waiting to find the right fit for him. At this point in his career, he wants to join a winner. The New York Knicks, Miami Heat and Toronto Raptors are some of the teams that have expressed interest in him.
“John Konchar is one of the top free agents available and has drawn interest, league sources say, from Miami, New York, Orlando and Toronto,” The Stein Line’s Marc Stein wrote.
All of those teams are considered playoff-caliber teams. The Knicks have two roster spots to fill, so Konchar very well could join the defending NBA champions. The veteran would be a great depth piece for a team looking to win its second consecutive championship.
Konchar has made $21 million throughout his career. New York has been very patient in filling out the roster, and waiting on a guy like Konchar could be worth it in the end. All of these teams will be battling for him, but it feels like the Knicks should be the ones getting their hands on Konchar.
