Andy Robertson will have to wait for his chance to play against his former side as Tottenham makes eight changes against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.

Andoni Iraola will be hoping his side can bounce back from the weekend’s disappointing goalless draw with Fulham, which saw the Reds brought back down to earth after encouraging wins over Ipswich and Atletico Madrid.

Having claimed that his side was suffering from a lack of freshness on Saturday, today’s cup excursion gives Iraola the perfect opportunity to rotate his squad and rest some of those who have featured heavily so far. Their visitors, meanwhile, are in desperate need of a boost.

After spending big on new signings during the summer, Roberto De Zerbi’s side has made a poor start to the season. They are yet to win in the Premier League, or even score a goal for that matter.

Spurs have already had to make it through one round of this season’s cup, having failed to secure a European spot after narrowly avoiding relegation, with last month’s 5-1 win over Championship side Charlton the only high point of what has been a dismal campaign so far.

De Zerbi has a number of high-profile names missing for today’s game, including club record signing Sandro Tonali. The midfieder is out injured, along with Dejan Kulusevski, Pedro Porro, Mykhailo Mudryk, Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert.

There’ll be no Richarlison either, despite Liverpool’s long-time nemesis being available after his transfer to Vasco Da Gama fell through, with De Zerbi choosing not to include him.

Instead, the Spurs boss makes eight changes to the side that drew with Everton at the weekend, with Robertson among those dropping to the bench.
