Despite Saturday’s frustrating 2-2 draw against Hull City, Chelsea are in it for the long haul with Xabi Alonso. But over at Manchester United, a managerial change might not be far away.
Alonso has won four out of his first six matches in charge, losing at The Emirates – arguably the toughest fixture of the Premier League season at the moment – while surrendering a lead against Hull on Saturday.
At Old Trafford, things are not quite as rosy. Carrick is under enormous pressure to start delivering results despite an impressive start to his tenure as Man United gaffer, having replaced Ruben Amorim last term.

Man United place Chelsea icon at the top of managerial list
Just two wins have come from Man United’s five games this season. A 5-2 win over Ipswich and a 4-0 drubbing of Champions League minnows Sabah Baku. Wins they were expected to secure, and did so.
But Man United were also expected to beat Hull on the opening day, losing 2-0. They were also expected to get one over former manager David Moyes, but Everton scored in the last minute to secure a 2-2 draw.

On Sunday, despite hosting Man City and Phil Foden’s early red card, Enzo Maresca’s men still managed to win the game 1-0. It has placed Carrick under enormous pressure ahead of the international break.
According to Corriere Della Sera, United have placed Antonio Conte at the top of their managerial list. Conte remains without a club after leaving Napoli at the end of last season, after a superb spell as boss.
Conte’s success at Chelsea and what he’s done since
There were some rumours that Conte could return to Chelsea following the sacking of Liam Rosenior. However, they were quickly put to bed when the Blues announced they would be appointing Alonso.
It is 10 years since Conte was announced as Chelsea manager, joining the club in the summer of 2016. By the end of the campaign, Conte’s 3-4-3 magic had guided the Blues to an unlikely Premier League title.

The second season saw Conte deliver the FA Cup trophy, winning 69 of his 106 matches in charge and boasting a win rate of 65%. Since then, Conte has had three jobs: Inter Milan, Tottenham, and then Napoli.
Like Chelsea, Conte lasted two years at Inter and boasted very similar stats. He won Serie A, and won 62% of his games in charge – 64 of 102 matches. His stint as Tottenham manager was not as successful.
That is more on Spurs than Conte, with the Italian still winning 53% of his games as boss. He won the Serie A again in 2024-25 with Napoli, and now he could return to the Premier League for a third stint.
