Joao Pedro, Reece James and Caicedo absent from opening Chelsea training

Joao Pedro, Reece James and Moises Caicedo were not involved in the opening 15 minutes of Chelsea training on Tuesday ahead of Friday night’s trip to Brentford.

Sky Sports News were given access to the start of the session at Cobham, with all three players absent from the group during the period open to the media.

That does **not** mean any of the trio have been ruled out against Brentford.

Sky were only permitted to watch the first 15 minutes, meaning James and Joao Pedro could have joined the session later or followed individual recovery programmes away from the cameras.

Neither showed an obvious injury problem after completing Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Hull City.

Caicedo absence raises fresh Chelsea concern

--------------------------------------------

Caicedo’s situation will attract greater attention because the Ecuador international has already missed Chelsea’s last three games with a calf problem.

Xabi Alonso previously identified Brentford as a potential return date but stressed Chelsea would not take another risk with his recovery.

His absence from the opening part of Tuesday’s session therefore leaves his Friday availability uncertain.

There was more encouraging news elsewhere.

Marco Palestra and Jordan Henderson both trained with the first-team group as they close in on their competitive Chelsea debuts.

Palestra is returning from a quad problem and has already been identified as a possible option against Brentford.

ReadChelsea has analysed [why Palestra’s return could be particularly important to Alonso’s system](https://readchelsea.com/2026/09/14/marco-palestra-xabi-alonso-chelsea-tactics/?utm_source=chatgpt.com), while Joao Pedro’s potential availability matters after his developing [partnership with Cole Palmer](https://readchelsea.com/2026/09/15/cole-palmer-joao-pedro-chelsea-passing-trend/).

No fresh injury has yet been confirmed for James or Joao Pedro.

Alonso is due to provide the definitive Chelsea team-news update in his pre-Brentford press conference on Thursday.
