Robbie Fowler has given his thoughts on Liverpool’s start under Andoni Iraola, and insisted that the Reds need to improve on what they’ve shown so far.
Liverpool has endured a mixed start to its first campaign under Iraola, with the Spaniard having taken over the reins following the firing of Arne Slot after a poor final year in charge for the title-winning Dutchman.
The Reds are still unbeaten under their new head coach, but have been far from convincing thus far, having drawn three of their five games in all competitions, and taken just six points from four Premeir League outings.
The goalless draw against Fulham at the weekend saw Liverpool’s momentum halted after encouraging signs in wins over Ipswich and Atletico Madrid, and while club legend Fowler isn’t too worried yet, he feels there is plenty of room for improvement.
“It’s interesting what he [Iraola] was saying after the Fulham game where he felt it was a step backwards,” Fowler told ITV ahead of the Reds’ Carabao Cup tie against Tottenham.
“I think they’ve done okay, but they can do better, that’s the obvious thing. I think it’s a case of Andoni coming in, everyone probably expecting to get them wins straight away. It hasn’t really materialized yet, but I think everyone’s still confident that he will get those.

“But I think, if it’s a school report, it’s a case of ‘we must do better’.”
Iraola himself has urged patience as he gets to grip with his new squad, with questions over the makeup of his squad persisting after the summer transfer window.
“I think now is not a moment to look backwards to the market,” Iraola told Sky Sports.
“When the January market opens, we will see where we are. We have very good players and a good squad. We need to find the balance and the right combinations so everyone can look even better than the player he is.

"If we are not well drilled, the timings are not there, then everyone looks worse. Everyone has to add a little bit."
Liverpool.com says: Fowler sums it up quite well. There have been some encouraging signs, but not enough to convince you that this season is going to be a major improvement on the last.
The draw with Fulham especially felt like last season’s Liverpool, and was a major disappointment after the two wins beforehand. Hopefully Iraola’s impact begins to take hold more, but he might need some help in the January window.
