Liverpool supporters gave Andy Robertson a warm reception upon his return to Anfield in the Carabao Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur. The Reds were facing Spurs on home soil in the third round of the competition on Tuesday night, with a place in the fourth round up for grabs.
Robertson left Liverpool as a free agent during the summer transfer window upon the expiration of his contract with the Reds, having spent nine years with the club.
The Scotland international was named on the bench by Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi in the Carabao Cup tie with Liverpool, and was introduced as a substitute in the second half.
Robertson replaced Destiny Udogie and was given a standing ovation by the Liverpool supporters inside Anfield, with the vast majority of the stadium going on to chant the left-back’s name for several seconds during play.
Liverpool had taken the lead in the tie in the first half thanks to a first-time effort from Alexis Mac Allister, which gave the Reds a 1-0 lead at the interval.
Cody Gakpo then doubled Liverpool’s advantage in the second half, before Conor Gallagher got Tottenham on the score sheet to reduce the deficit.
Robertson had made five appearances for Tottenham before his return to Anfield, featuring in all of Tottenham’s matches so far this term.
De Zerbi has handed the former Liverpool star starts in three of Tottenham’s four Premier League matches so far this term, and could return to the starting line-up this weekend when they face Aston Villa.

Following Robertson’s exit, Liverpool saw Kostas Tsimikas return to the club following the conclusion of his loan spell at Roma last season.
Tsimikas has been competing with Milos Kerkez for the left-back spot for Liverpool this season following Robertson’s exit, with the Hungary international established as the first-choice option under new manager Andoni Iraola.
The next chance for Robertson to return to Anfield will be on December 19, when Liverpool will host Tottenham in the Premier League.
