Liverpool have been told why 19-year-old Trey Nyoni could be the long-term solution to the club’s midfield dilemmas. The Reds were heavily linked with signing a new midfielder in the summer transfer window, but chose not to strengthen that area of the squad.
Nyoni was in action for Liverpool on Tuesday night as the Merseyside outfit claimed a 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
Andoni Iraola’s side secured the win thanks to goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai, with Nyoni also earning plenty of praise for his performance.
Iraola named Nyoni in the starting line-up to face Spurs, and went on to play a key role in the midfield alongside Mac Allister and James McConnell before being substituted around the hour mark.
Ex-Liverpool star Jamie Redknapp has lauded Nyoni's display for the Reds against Tottenham and explained why he believes the 19-year-old has a promising future ahead in a deeper midfield position.
"I thought he [Nyoni] was excellent in that first half, but he's got a lot to learn in that area, it's a specialised position," Redknapp told Sky Sports.
"He did himself no harm whatsoever. Playing forward, getting the ball into good areas, comfortable on the ball. He's just a really good footballer who just sees the picture.
"He's been a No.10 as a kid, so now he's got to play in that slightly different role where he's got to back people up.
"And he's got to always think that the worst is going to happen on a football field. If he does that, he's going to go a long way."
Liverpool were linked with a number of midfielders throughout the summer transfer window, amongst them Bournemouth star Alex Scott, whom Iraola managed during his tenure with the Cherries.
Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Scott is valued by Bournemouth at approximately £100million, and was linked with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United over the summer.
Liverpool academy product and former Everton defender Conor Coady appeared alongside Redknapp for Sky Sports' coverage, and believes Nyoni could emulate Scott's trajectory under Iraola's guidance.
"We see someone like a Trey Nyoni, I'm hoping he goes on and has an incredible Liverpool career, because I really rate him that highly," Coady said.
"He could become that [next Alex Scott], rather than going out and buy someone, he could become that if he learns and takes on everything that Andoni Iraola is trying to do."
