Brentford progressed in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night while managing to protect much of the side likely to face Chelsea on Friday.
Keith Andrews made **eight changes** from Saturday’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Bournemouth for the 2-1 victory over Reading.
Only Kristoffer Ajer, Mamadou Sangare and Keane Lewis-Potter retained their places, leaving several regular starters with a valuable night away from the starting XI just three days before Chelsea arrive at the Gtech Community Stadium.
That is perhaps the most important takeaway for Xabi Alonso.
Callum Wilson gave Brentford the perfect start after only three minutes before Fabio Carvalho doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time.
Carvalho’s inclusion was particularly notable.

Chelsea therefore cannot count on their rivals carrying significant cup fatigue into Friday night.
The rotation also provides some clues about the team Alonso is likely to encounter.
Brentford entered the Reading tie **unbeaten in four Premier League matches**, and Andrews clearly resisted the temptation to disrupt the core of that league side for a third-round cup fixture.
