Giorgi Mamardashvili earned the praise of his head coach after a stunning save in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Tottenham, with the backup goalkeeper proving a point.
Mamardashvili may no longer be considered the long-term successor to Alisson as Liverpool’s No. 1, but he still has a crucial role to play.
With the £30 million signing of Lucca Brughmans at the end of the summer transfer window, the Georgian could have lost focus when called upon for the first time this season.
But after an early hiccup, Mamardashvili recovered to produce a largely strong display in victory over Tottenham in the Carabao Cup.

And speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Iraola made a point to single out his goalkeeper for a stellar stop to deny Omar Marmoush a deflected equaliser in the 85th minute.
“We want to play well, we want to earn the right to be in the next round,” Iraola said.
“Everyone has contributed. I remember a great save from Giorgi in a key moment of the game.
“So I’m also happy for him and it’s important for us to have as many players as we can, because we will need everyone in this season where we’re in four competitions.”

Mamardashvili was caught out for Tottenham’s goal, with a meek attempt to claim a corner under pressure before Conor Gallagher turned it home, but overall it was a strong performance.
The 25-year-old made five saves, with a rate of 1.26 goals prevented based on xG, and he was also active as he complemented Liverpool’s high line.
No starter came away from the game with a lower passing accuracy, however, with Mamardashvili hitting his intended target with only 65 percent of his attempts.
But the bulk of his job is in keeping the ball out of the net – and ESPN’s Beth Lindop spotted a welcome gesture from those on the bench after Dominik Szoboszlai’s winner.
During the celebrations after the Hungarian’s outrageous volley in stoppage time, Lindop wrote on X that Mamardashvili was singled out for plaudits for keeping Liverpool ahead minutes earlier.
It should act as a confidence-booster for a player who could rightly be questioning his position at Liverpool, having agreed to join back in 2024 with an expectation that he would be No. 1 by this stage.
Though a new succession plan appears to be in place with 18-year-old Brughmans set to arrive from Genk next summer, Mamardashvili will remain key as Alisson’s backup in the season ahead.
