London, Sept. 16 (SANA) Liverpool knocked Tottenham Hotspur out of the League Cup with a 3-1 third-round win at Anfield on Tuesday as Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai scored for a much-changed home side.
Mac Allister opened the scoring in the 21st minute, firing into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area after Tottenham goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili had earlier denied Lucas Bergvall at the other end.
Gakpo doubled Liverpool’s lead nine minutes after the break, finishing a move set up by Mac Allister.
Tottenham pulled one back through Conor Gallagher in the 69th minute from Mateus Fernandes’ corner and pushed for an equalizer, but Mamardashvili denied Omar Marmoush before Savio fired wide.
Szoboszlai settled the tie in the first minute of stoppage time, controlling the ball before striking from around 25 yards to send Liverpool into the fourth round.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola made 10 changes from the side that drew 0-0 with Fulham at the weekend, while Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi made eight changes from the team held by Everton.
Tottenham created several chances but failed to convert them, while Liverpool capitalized at the other end to advance despite fielding a largely second-string lineup.
The defeat was Tottenham’s third in six matches across all competitions this season.
