Levi Colwill knows Chelsea inside out, progressing through the different age groups at the club after joining as a child.
Colwill is, of course, now part of the senior squad and one of the most important defenders in the Stamford Bridge dressing room. He has featured in all but one of Chelsea’s Premier League games so far this season, the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal.
The centre-back was an unused substitute that day, with Xabi Alonso managing a small issue he had. But Colwill is fine again and helped Chelsea earn a point in their 2-2 draw with Hull City last weekend.

Levi Colwill surprised by level of Chelsea’s different age groups
Colwill was recently asked to share the thing that has surprised him the most since joining Chelsea. In response, the 23-year-old said it was the level of the various youth teams at Cobham and how that level improves as you go up.
“Probably, growing up here and that, just the level of every age group and how it improves until you get to the first team,” Colwill told Chelsea’s official club website in response to the question. “There’s always improvements being made, so you can never rest on your laurels. So every step you make, you can never think you’ve done it, even now.”
Since making his first-team debut for the Blues, Colwill has gone to appear in another 82 games. That figure would be much higher as well if the Englishman did not sustain an ACL injury last summer.
Chelsea missed Colwill during the 2025/26 campaign and will be glad to have him back, but he has not been able to help their leaky defence this term. Alonso’s side have already conceded nine goals in just four games.
Possession has also been a problem for Chelsea, with the midfield really struggling to control games without Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.
Levi Colwill’s circle at Chelsea
Chelsea already had several English players before the start of the season, and they now have even more following the arrivals of Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck. Colwill also told Chelsea’s official website that he spends time at lunch and travelling to games sitting next to Henderson, Welbeck, Reece James, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers.
Chelsea’s English contingent and the rest of Alonso’s squad face Brentford next. They travel to the Gtech Community Stadium looking to avoid a run of three straight top-flight games without a win.
Chelsea drew 2-2 with Brentford at their place last season, so it is not going to be an easy game. Colwill and the rest of the backline are going to have to defend much better.
