Enzo Maresca hit back at the fallout over the Manchester derby as he said Manchester City are still waiting for an apology over a Manchester United winner in the fixture three years ago. Maresca said that it was 'poor' for so much coverage of the derby to have focused on the controversial goal when such decisions even themselves out over time.
United were furious when Erling Haaland's goal was given when the VAR officials did not appreciate that Enzo Fernandez was interfering with play from an offside position. Pro Ref chief Howard Webb was quick to apologise to United later that day, and has since gone into greater detail about why it should not have been allowed with those involved with making the incorrect call stood down from duties for a month.
Maresca was not interested in discussing the fallout though, instead pointing out a near-identical moment in a derby three years ago when Marcus Rashford helped Bruno Fernandes score from an offside position - that City still haven't been contacted over.
The Blues boss believes his side should have had more credit after Sunday's game given they played for so long without Phil Foden.
"I think sometimes it goes for you, sometimes it goes against you. Three years ago when I was here it happened exactly the same against Man United. We lost the derby there," he said.
"The goal was not a regular goal. To be honest, no-one apologised We are still waiting for an apology for that goal. Sometimes it happens for you, sometimes against you. It's football.
"I'm pleased with the unbelievable performance from the players on Sunday. I'm very pleased with that. And again, talking about one episode or one moment after that game, when we played for 70-75 minutes with 10 players, I think it's quite poor.
"I think the performance was unbelievable. I'm pleased with the performance."
