Liverpool returned to winning ways as Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult start to the season continued with a Carabao Cup defeat to a largely second-string Reds side on Tuesday night.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side at least scored their first goal against Premier League opposition this season, having failed to find the net in their opening four league games.

However, goals from Alexis Mac Allister, Cody Gakpo and Dominik Szoboszlai sent Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool into the fourth round.
Elsewhere, Liverpool defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe has been officially named in Austria’s U21 squad for their final two UEFA U21 EURO 2027 qualifying matches.
Austria will host Denmark in Vienna on October 2 before travelling to Wales on October 6. Peter Perchtold’s side currently sit second in Group I, level on points with Belgium and Denmark.
The group winners and the best runner-up will qualify directly for next year’s tournament, while the remaining eight runners-up will enter November’s play-offs. The U21 EURO 2027 will be held in Serbia and Albania.
“We are very satisfied with the squad composition and especially with the development of our players. Many players are already very familiar with our processes, while at the same time several lads have earned their chance in the U21s with strong performances,” Perchtold said.
“We are well prepared for the upcoming challenges and are also proud that several of our players have now also come to the attention of the senior national team.”
Liverpool defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe joined La Liga side Levante on loan for the 2026/27 season after completing his move to the Reds.
The Reds agreed a deal in principle to sign the 18-year-old centre-back from Austria Vienna earlier this year following a successful summer trial. Ndukwe made his Levante debut in Sunday’s 4-2 defeat to Barcelona after starting his first three games on the bench.
His appearance means Ndukwe has now reached the threshold for a UK work permit. Liverpool would have been able to register him using an exemption slot from February, but that will no longer be necessary.
