Knicks sign 6-foot-11 ex-Warriors draft bust to compete for roster spot image
A 6-foot-11 ex-Golden State Warriors draft bust recently received a golden opportunity to revive his less than stellar NBA career.
According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the 25-year-old center has signed an Exhibit 9 deal with the defending champion New York Knicks.
“The New York Knicks have signed former No. 2 overall pick James Wiseman to an Exhibit 9 deal,” Scotto wrote on X/Twitter Wednesday. “The 25-year-old center has averaged 9.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in 18.8 minutes per game in five seasons with the Golden State Warriors, Detroit Pistons, and Indiana Pacers.”
Expectations were high for Wiseman after his shortened, yet eye-opening freshman campaign at Memphis (he averaged 19.7 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game in three outings with the Tigers).
While not classified as a stretch five entering a league full of evolving, multi-faceted centers, Wiseman was believed to have the tools to be a daunting pick-and-roll, low-post, and rim-running big man with encouraging defensive upside.
After exhibiting flashes of potential as a rookie with the Dubs, things quickly went downhill for Wiseman as a second-year pro, prompting Golden State to ship him to the Pistons midway through the 2022-23 campaign.
The Nashville, Tennessee native spent 1.5 years with the Pistons before joining the Indiana Pacers in 2024-25. Wiseman only appeared in five games with Indiana (2024-26), averaging 4.6 points and 1.5 rebounds while shooting 55% from the field.
Although Wiseman hasn’t lived up to the billing thus far, his NBA career appears far from over ahead of the 2026-27 season.
