Everton’s 1-0 Carabao Cup victory over Wolves at the Hill Dickinson had a distinctly high-profile audience, with British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney among the crowd.
Charly Alcaraz’s 80th-minute winner eventually settled a tight third-round tie and sent David Moyes’ side into the last 16, giving two of the club’s best-known supporters something to celebrate.
Carney and Burnham meet before Everton win
Carney, the former Governor of the Bank of England and Bank of Canada, has followed Everton since watching the 1989 FA Cup final against Liverpool. He publicly confirmed his allegiance during a hearing in Canada in 2013, shortly before taking up his role at the Bank of England.
Burnham’s appearance at the Hill Dickinson marked his return to public duties following a period of compassionate leave after the death of his father, Roy, who had suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.
The Liverpool Echo reported on the meeting between the two Prime Ministers before kick-off, with Carney recalling how his support for Everton became public.
“I am an Everton supporter. I have got some cousins in Liverpool.”
Carney also looked back on the 1989 FA Cup final, admitting the result “went the wrong way”, and praised Burnham for his work in the campaign for justice following the Hillsborough disaster.
Burnham described welcoming Carney to Liverpool as a “real life privilege” and joked that the pair now had someone with whom they could “commiserate about Everton”. There was less need for that by full-time.
Alcaraz sends Everton through
Everton were far from their best against Wolves and former Blues goalkeeper Joao Virginia frustrated Moyes’ side for much of the evening.
The breakthrough finally arrived when Tyler Dibling created the opening from the right and substitute Alcaraz produced an excellent first touch before curling his finish beyond Virginia. Everton held on for the 1-0 victory and a place in the fourth round, having been knocked out by Wolves at the same stage last season.
ReadEverton has previously looked at Burnham’s political career and Everton connection and his previous visits to watch the Blues. This time, both Prime Ministers left the Hill Dickinson with a cup win to enjoy.
