Charly Alcaraz came off the bench to score the winner asEverton beat Wolves 1-0 at the Hill Dickinson and booked their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Everton had to work hard for it and struggled to turn possession into goals, with Tyler Dibling providing much of their attacking threat before setting up Alcaraz for the decisive moment.
Everton player ratings
Jordan Pickford – 6.5
Had little to do for long spells but made an important save with his legs when Adam Armstrong broke clear after half-time. Also dealt with Tommy Doyle’s late effort to preserve the clean sheet.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 6.5
A solid enough performance at right-back. Got forward when opportunities arose without leaving Everton exposed too often at the other end.
Jake O’Brien – 6.5
Threatened from a set-piece in the first half and was generally comfortable defensively. Wolves did not ask too many questions of Everton’s centre-backs.
Michael Keane – 6.5
Steady alongside O’Brien without being particularly stretched. Read the danger well when Wolves did threaten on the counter.
Vitaliy Mykolenko – 6
A relatively quiet night. Did his defensive work and supported Grealish on the left without having a major influence.
James Garner – 7
One of Everton’s better performers. Used the ball well and delivered some dangerous passes, although the home side struggled for long periods to turn their possession into clear chances.
Hayden Hackney – 6.5
Neat and comfortable in possession without really taking control of the game. Replaced by Alcaraz as Moyes looked for the breakthrough.
Tyler Dibling – 7.5
Everton’s biggest attacking threat. Kept trying to make things happen and eventually produced the decisive contribution, fighting his way in from the right before finding Alcaraz.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall – 6
Worked hard between the lines but struggled to have enough influence in the final third. Everton needed more creativity through the middle.
Jack Grealish – 6.5
Saw plenty of the ball on the left and tested Virginia, but this was not one of his more influential Everton performances. Replaced late on.
Thierno Barry – 6
Worked hard through the middle and headed a good chance over before half-time. Still lacked the cutting edge Everton needed from their centre-forward.
Substitutes
Brennan Johnson – 6.5
Added more pace through the middle after replacing Barry and twice threatened to get in behind. Virginia prevented him from making a decisive contribution.
Charly Alcaraz – 7.5
Made the difference almost immediately. A lovely first touch opened up the space before an excellent finish into the far corner.
Tyrique George – 6
Added fresh legs after replacing Grealish but had limited time to affect the game.
Man of the match: Tyler Dibling – 7.5
Alcaraz won it, but Dibling was Everton’s most persistent attacking threat and produced the work and pass that created the goal.
