Chelsea have entered a new era after Todd Boehly and Mark Walter sold their shares in the club, a move that hands full control of the Premier League side to private equity firm Clearlake Capital. Boehly and Walter were part of the consortium that joined forces with Clearlake to buy Chelsea from Roman Abramovich during the UK‑mandated takeover in May 2022.
Until now, Clearlake held 61.5% of the club, with the remaining stake split between Boehly, Walter and Swiss investor Hansjorg Wyss. A late‑night announcement on Wednesday confirmed that Clearlake affiliates will purchase Boehly's interest, with Wyss staying on as a key partner.
As part of the same transition, Walter's shareholding will also be absorbed, giving Clearlake complete ownership. Chelsea said Boehly had shown 'unwavering commitment' to the ownership group's belief that supporters sit at the centre of the club's identity.
The statement highlighted the scale of investment made under joint ownership across the men's and women's squads, Cobham's facilities, medical and performance departments, academy pathways, and leadership structures.
With Boehly stepping down as chairman, the club insisted it is well placed for its next stage of development, adding that Clearlake intends to continue the strategic direction already set.
Boehly described his tenure as 'an honour', thanking the Premier League, staff, coaches, players and fans.

He said he was proud of the collective decisions and investment made alongside Clearlake and expressed confidence in the club's future under their stewardship.
Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano praised Boehly's contribution, calling him an important partner who would "always be part of the Chelsea story".
They reiterated their commitment to strengthening the club's infrastructure, sporting performance and player development as they assume full control.
Chelsea, now managed by Xabi Alonso and sitting sixth in the Premier League, confirmed that day‑to‑day operations and long‑term strategy will continue unchanged.
