Tottenham Hotspur are still searching for their first win against a Premier League team in the 2026/27 season, as they were bounced out of the League Cup in the Third Round by fellow Big Six club Liverpool at Anfield on Tuesday night, losing 3-1 with the Reds scoring worldies and robbing Spurs attackers with wonder saves, too.
Spurs will face another tough opponent this weekend in Aston Villa, though the Lions are vulnerable after a tough summer transfer window in which they lost their best attacking players, including Morgan Rogers to Chelsea.
Tottenham are still waiting for their own best 11 to come together, but not only are the new signings like Omar Marmoush and Savio integrating, but there are several key players from last season returning to fitness. Mohammed Kudus and James Maddison were in on the action against Liverpool, and now Spurs are set to get a big return this weekend, too.
Tottenham are getting a crucial starter back
Roberto De Zerbi confirmed to reporters after the Liverpool game, via Chris Cowlin, that star right back Pedro Porro will be back for the game this Saturday afternoon. Porro has been out for the last couple of matches, bouncing out of last weekend's 0-0 draw with Everton as a late injury scratch and was then unable to play against the other big Merseyside club in Spurs League Cup exit.
Archie Gray has proven to be as suspect of a right back option as fans would have expected, and he had a really poor game against the Liverpool attack and Cody Gakpo at mid week. So Porro's return will be a hugely welcome addition, and he has a real chance to prove to be one of the difference makers against Aston Villa this weekend in the Premier League.
Pedro Porro has suffered fitness issues throughout the start of the 2026/27 campaign after a grueling summer in which he was the best right back at the World Cup and won the tournament with Spain as one of their most important players.
He has that same level of importance for Spurs and is a massive upgrade over Archie Gray as the one true right back in the Spurs squad. Tottenham need him out there to solidify the flank and help whoever starts on the right wing, and Roberto De Zerbi saying he will be back against Villa is the best possible injury news this team could have received against a side that is becoming a bit of a rival for them in the top flight.
