Arsenal have been drawn away to League Two side Fleetwood Town in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Mikel Arteta’s side will travel to Highbury Stadium after Wednesday night’s draw handed the Gunners a tie against the lowest-ranked club remaining in the competition.
Fleetwood secured their place in the last 16 by producing an upset against Championship side Sheffield United.
Arsenal Draw Fleetwood Town in Carabao Cup
Arsenal will face Fleetwood away after progressing through the third round with victory over Ipswich Town.
Fleetwood, who compete in League Two, beat Sheffield United 1-0 at Highbury Stadium to reach the fourth round for the first time in their history.
Rhys Norrington-Davies’ second-half own goal proved decisive as the Lancashire side eliminated Championship opposition.
That victory means Fleetwood will now welcome the reigning Premier League champions in one of the biggest home fixtures in their recent history.
Despite the significant difference between the clubs’ league positions, Arsenal will have little reason to underestimate their opponents after Fleetwood’s performance against Sheffield United.
The hosts were also unbeaten in nine matches across all competitions following Wednesday night’s victory.
When Will Arsenal Play Fleetwood?
The Carabao Cup fourth round is scheduled to take place during the week commencing October 26.
An exact date and kick-off time for Fleetwood against Arsenal have not yet been confirmed.
Broadcast arrangements will also be announced closer to the fixture.
The tie will be decided over one match, with the winner progressing to the quarter-finals of the competition.
Arsenal’s trip to Fleetwood is one of eight fourth-round fixtures.
Liverpool host Chelsea in arguably the standout tie, while Everton face Newcastle United and Fulham meet Crystal Palace.
The complete draw was confirmed by Sky Sports following Wednesday night’s third-round fixtures.
Fleetwood Tie Gives Arteta Rotation Opportunity
On paper, the draw gives Arteta an opportunity to manage his squad during a busy period of the season.
Arsenal are competing domestically and in Europe, meaning opportunities to rotate established starters could become increasingly valuable as the campaign progresses.
The club have continued adding depth throughout the squad, including the signing of Phoenix Blayney.
However, Fleetwood’s victory over Sheffield United serves as an immediate warning against treating the fourth-round tie as a formality.
No decisions have been made over Arteta’s team selection and the fixture remains more than a month away.
Arsenal’s immediate attention will instead return to their Premier League campaign, where they are attempting to defend the title.
That title race has already attracted plenty of attention, including Gary Neville’s assessment of Arsenal’s main challengers.
For now, though, Arsenal know the next step in their Carabao Cup campaign: a first-team trip to Fleetwood with a quarter-final place at stake.
