Todd Boehly has said Chelsea are "well positioned for continued success" after the American billionaire and Mark Walter sold their stakes in the club.

Boehly and Walter were part of the BlueCo consortium that acquired the Premier League side from Roman Abramovich in May 2022, bringing an end to the Russian oligarch's 19-year ownership. But it was revealed last month that the duo had begun discussions to offload their 12.8 per cent shares in Chelsea.

The sale of the shares sees Clearlake Capital take full control of the club. Private equity company Clearlake had previously owned 61.5 per cent of the club, with Boehly and Walter carving up the remaining shares with another investor, Hansjorg Wyss, who will remain an "important stakeholder and partner in the ownership group", the club said in a statement on Wednesday.

Following the announcement, Boehly has issued a statement of his own. He said: "It has been an honour to serve as chairman of Chelsea Football Club. I would like to thank the many who helped secure a bright future for the club, including the English Premier League, the coaches and players, the talented leadership and staff at Chelsea, and the legions of dedicated fans.

"I have valued my partnership with Clearlake and the wider ownership group, and the collective decisions and investment we have made to support the immediate and long-term success of the club. I am confident that Chelsea is well positioned for continued success under Clearlake’s leadership."

football.london has previously reported how Boehly and Clearlake's chief, Behdad Eghbali, disagreed over strategic direction during their time at the club, including potential plans to redevelop Stamford Bridge. Nevertheless, Eghbali described Boehly's influence as "important".

In a joint statement, Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, co-founders of Clearlake Capital, said: "Todd has been an important partner throughout our ownership of Chelsea, and we thank him for his time and contribution as chairman. He will always be a part of the Chelsea story and family.

"Clearlake has served as Chelsea’s majority owner since 2022, and as we move to full control our focus is to continue investing in the club’s infrastructure, sporting performance, player development and delivering long-term success for Chelsea and the club’s supporters."

BlueCo spent £2.5billion on the Blues in May 2022 and committed to injecting an additional £1.75bn into the club. Chelsea have had something of a turbulent period since, with expenditure exceeding £1.5bn on player acquisitions. There have been six different permanent managers departing and arriving, with Xabi Alonso joining the Blues ahead of the 2026/27 season. The club invested £349m on transfers this summer, securing 11 players while offloading 17 for £382m and dispatching 22 on loan to register a profit.
