Todd Boehly has left Chelsea after agreeing to sell his stake in the club, with Clearlake Capital moving to take full control at Stamford Bridge.
Mark Walter is also selling his interest, bringing an end to the ownership structure established when the consortium bought Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in 2022.
Chelsea have confirmed that Hansjörg Wyss will remain an important stakeholder and partner, meaning Clearlake will have full control rather than outright sole ownership of the club.
The announcement completes a process that accelerated rapidly this month after Todd Boehly was reported to be closing in on selling his Chelsea stake to Clearlake.
Boehly will also leave his position as Chelsea chairman.
Todd Boehly leaves Chelsea after Clearlake agreement
Chelsea confirmed the major ownership change in an official announcement detailing Boehly and Walter’s exits.
Clearlake has been Chelsea’s majority shareholder since the 2022 takeover but operated under an unusual governance structure which gave Boehly and Clearlake joint control.
That arrangement is now ending.
The Financial Times reports that Clearlake has agreed to pay around £950million for Boehly and Walter’s combined stake, with the transaction valuing Chelsea at approximately £5billion including debt.
That represents a significant increase from the £2.5bn purchase price agreed for Chelsea in 2022, when the consortium also committed a further £1.75bn towards investment in the club.
Wyss is not leaving alongside Boehly and Walter and will remain part of the ownership group.
Chelsea have also stressed that the transition will bring no changes to the club’s day-to-day operations, leadership or existing strategy.
Clearlake sends message to Chelsea supporters
A day after the ownership transition was announced, Chelsea’s owners issued a further message setting out their plans for the club.
In an official message to Chelsea supporters, the ownership group said its ambition remains to compete for the Premier League and other major trophies.
It also reiterated plans to strengthen Chelsea commercially while continuing to invest in the playing squad and the club’s long-term infrastructure.
The statement said: “Our ambition is clear: to compete at the highest level, to win major trophies, and to build sustained success.”
That infrastructure commitment is particularly significant given Chelsea’s long-running questions over the future of Stamford Bridge.
No definitive stadium solution was announced alongside the ownership change, but Clearlake has made clear that finding the right long-term answer remains part of its plans.
What does Clearlake full control mean for Chelsea?
The biggest immediate change is the removal of Chelsea’s previous shared-control model.
Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano were already hugely influential in the club’s operation, but Boehly’s departure removes one of the principal figures from the ownership structure.
Chelsea’s official announcement says Clearlake intends to continue the strategic direction already established at the club rather than introduce a major change in approach.
That should mean continuity for Xabi Alonso and Chelsea’s existing sporting operation.
The ownership group has specifically highlighted sporting performance, player development and infrastructure as areas in which it intends to continue investing.
Boehly, meanwhile, leaves four years after becoming one of the most recognisable faces of the consortium that succeeded Abramovich.
He said Chelsea were well positioned for continued success under Clearlake’s leadership as his departure was confirmed.
For Chelsea, the development brings an end to months of questions over whether the club’s ownership structure could change.
Clearlake will now have full control, Wyss remains involved and the club has publicly committed to maintaining its current sporting and business strategy as a new chapter begins at Stamford Bridge.
