Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has reflected on his trip to the Hill Dickinson after watching Everton beat Wolves 1-0 alongside UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
As we reported last night, the two Evertonians held bilateral talks before putting affairs of state to one side and watching David Moyes’ side book their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Carney has since posted about the evening on social media, recalling a rather less enjoyable introduction to watching the Blues.
“The first time I went to an Everton match was during the FA Cup in 1989. Unfortunately, it went the wrong way. Tonight, they didn’t disappoint. Thanks for the invite, @andyburnham.”
Carney enjoys a happier Everton experience
Carney’s first Everton game was the 1989 FA Cup final at Wembley, when Liverpool beat Colin Harvey’s side 3-2 after extra time.
He has never hidden his Everton allegiance and famously confirmed it during a Canadian parliamentary hearing in 2013, shortly before becoming Governor of the Bank of England.
His latest visit came in rather different circumstances. Now Prime Minister of Canada, Carney met his British counterpart at the Hill Dickinson before the pair watched Carlos Alcaraz’s 80th-minute winner settle a tight cup tie.
Burnham had joked beforehand that he and Carney might end up commiserating together.
No need.
Thirty-seven years after Carney’s first Everton match ended in Wembley disappointment, this one went rather better.
And Burnham, it seems, can consider the invitation a success.
