Former second-round pick Trevor Keels is signing an Exhibit 10 contract with the Wizards, tweets Keith Smith of Spotrac.
The move was foreshadowed by a G League trade that was completed on Wednesday. That deal, which involved the Heat’s, Kings’, and Wizards’ affiliates, sent Keels’ returning rights from the Sioux Falls Skyforce to the Capital City Go-Go. Mo Bamba (Stockton Kings to Sioux Falls) and Leaky Black (Capital City to Stockton) are among the other NBA veterans whose G League rights were moved in that trade.
By signing an Exhibit 10 contract with Washington, Keels is now on track to receive a bonus worth up to $91K if he’s waived by Washington before the regular season and then spends at least 60 days with the Go-Go. Exhibit 10 deals can also be converted to two-way contracts prior to opening night.
The 42nd overall pick in the 2022 draft, Keels played just three games for the Knicks as a rookie, then was out of the NBA until he made eight appearances for the Heat last season after signing a two-way deal in February.
Although his NBA experience is quite limited, the 6’3″ guard has starred at the G League level in recent years. In 40 outings last season for the Skyforce, Keels averaged 18.7 points, 3.3 assists, and 3.3 rebounds in 32.8 minutes per game, with a shooting line of .448/.402/.732.
The 23-year-old also had a strong Summer League showing for the Heat this July before sustaining an MCL sprain, posting averages of 20.0 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 3.0 APG, and 2.0 SPG on .500/.379/.857 shooting in four games (27.9 MPG) at the California Classic and in Las Vegas.
