Chelsea have become quite infamous for the number of sporting directors they employ, with their critics feeling that five is too many.
Laurence Stewart, Paul Winstanley and Joe Shields are the three who are well-known among the Chelsea fan base, but Dave Fallows and Sam Jewell also hold the same title. Their responsibilities at the club are different, though, and that has come to light recently.
Fallows may not be the one identifying talent, but the former Liverpool employee still has a big say on who comes in.
Dave Fallows responsible for doing character checks
Chelsea made a lot of signings during the summer transfer window, bringing in the likes of Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix and Emiliano Martinez. It is very likely that Fallows gave his input on those names.
According to the Daily Mail, Fallows does character checks on Chelsea’s potential signings, which is one of his responsibilities. Fallows and Chelsea’s other sporting directors will be happy with the transfer business they did in the summer.

Straight out of the Trump stable. A perfect example of someone who has little or no experience of a subject, assuming he has superior knowledge. This over estimation is a result of him not having enough knowledge to know he didn't,'have enough knowledge.
That’s very harsh! He made some terrible decisions but at least he spent big. Can’t say he didn’t try to do well even if he got it wrong. The same can’t be said for Ashley etc
Boehly probably has a worse reputation than he deserves. Everyone knows his name but few speak about Eghbali for some reason. I will remember Boehly as clueless but ambitious, and that’s better than many owners.
They had to pay £117m to sign Rogers from Aston Villa, but the attacking midfielder has made an immediate impact at Stamford Bridge. In four Premier League games, he has already scored three goals.
Rogers has also made an impact in the Carabao Cup, providing three assists in just 45 minutes against Leeds United. Chelsea were able to come back from 2-0 down to win 6-3 thanks to Rogers’ contribution.
There has been massive change at Chelsea, with Clearlake Capital purchasing Todd Boehly’s stake in the club. However, the expectation is that Clearlake will continue to support Xabi Alonso and the whole sporting structure.
Chelsea signed good characters during the summer
Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson are definitely two players who would have ticked Fallows’ boxes. In fact, Chelsea signed Welbeck and Henderson because of their characters.
The club were looking for experienced footballers who would make a positive impact in the dressing room, and Welbeck and Henderson are just that. They also have something to offer on the pitch, though.
Welbeck is still a capable goalscorer, netting three times in the Carabao Cup this season. Last term, he scored 13 goals in 37 Premier League appearances.
Welbeck could now be needed against Brentford, with Joao Pedro picking up an injury ahead of Friday’s west London derby.
