Arsenal have been handed a potentially useful Kai Havertz fitness boost after Jürgen Klopp named his first squads as Germany head coach.
Havertz has been selected for Germany’s opening two UEFA Nations League matches against the Netherlands and Greece, but he is not part of the second group due to face Serbia and Greece in October.
Klopp has taken the unusual step of naming 44 players across two separate squads as he attempts to assess a wider pool during the international window. Germany’s opening group contains Havertz alongside established names including Jamal Musiala.
Havertz will initially join Germany for their trip to the Netherlands on September 24.
Klopp’s side then host Greece on September 27 before the majority of the first group return to their clubs.
Germany’s second selection will take over for fixtures against Serbia on October 1 and Greece on October 4. The DFB confirmed that Klopp deliberately split his 44-player selection across the four Nations League matches.
ESPN specifically lists Havertz among the players chosen for the first two fixtures, rather than the second group.
That means the Arsenal forward should avoid the possibility of four international matches being added to his workload during the extended break.
The decision could prove valuable for Mikel Arteta.
Havertz has started all four of Arsenal’s Premier League matches this season and remains ahead of Viktor Gyökeres in the battle to lead the attack.
The German has therefore already accumulated significant minutes during the opening weeks of the campaign.
The Independent reports that established players including Havertz are expected to be restricted to a maximum of two Germany appearances under Klopp’s unusual selection plan.
For Arsenal, any additional recovery time could be particularly welcome given their current fitness concerns.
Arteta has already had to carefully manage Jurriën Timber’s return, while Ben White, William Saliba and Cristhian Mosquera have all featured in the club’s developing injury picture.

Havertz’s place in Germany’s plans also underlines his continued importance at international level despite Klopp beginning a new era.
The former Liverpool manager insisted there is no first or second-choice group, explaining that both squads have been constructed around balance, experience and the opportunity to assess players.
For Havertz, that means two high-profile opportunities to impress Germany’s new head coach.
For Arsenal, however, the most important detail may be what happens afterwards.
If Havertz returns after Germany’s September 27 meeting with Greece as planned, Arteta should have one of his most-used attacking players back considerably earlier than Germany internationals involved across all four Nations League dates.
That could become increasingly valuable as Arsenal attempt to manage the demands of the Premier League, Champions League and domestic cups.
