Tottenham missed some clear-cut chances against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.
Tottenham Hotspur have seen an underwhelming start to the campaign. They continue to struggle in the Premier League after remaining winless in their opening four matches under Roberto De Zerbi.
A second consecutive 0-0 draw in the Premier League last weekend saw the Lilywhites slide further down the table. A goalless stalemate with Everton, coupled with their early exit from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Liverpool in midweek, has seen Roberto De Zerbi come under immense pressure.
In the Premier League, Spurs are yet to find the back of the net after 360 minutes of action. The players have been creating chances in the final third but have lacked the cutting edge to convert them into goals.
Andy Gray positive about Tottenham’s campaign despite their lack of goals
Tottenham are back in Premier League action on Saturday as they welcome Aston Villa to N17, with both teams urgently seeking their first Premier League win of the 2026/27 season. Despite Spurs’ heavily scrutinised attacking struggles, the Opta supercomputer has installed De Zerbi’s side as favourites to secure all three points.
There has been gradual improvement in the team’s performances with every passing week. Now, former Scotland international Andy Gray pointed out that Tottenham created enough chances against Liverpool, but their lack of cutting edge cost them a place in the Carabao Cup fourth round. The football pundit has also seen plenty of promise in what he has watched from De Zerbi’s side so far, suggesting their fortunes could change if they become clinical in front of goal.
“I mean, they were three of the best goals you’ll see in one game – best strikes you’ll see in one game. [Those were] fabulous goals,”Andy Gray said on the Keys and Gray Unleashed podcast.
“So, I am not sitting here and being all gloom and doom. Did I see positivity around what I watched at Tottenham? Yes, I did, I did. They created enough chances; the finishing is woeful at the moment.
“That is something they have to address. But I think, if they can do that, and it might sound like a lone voice in the wilderness, I don’t see a problem for them.
“I think, once they start winning games, they will steadily start climbing the table.”
Spurs have to win against Aston Villa
Villa currently sit 19th in the table with one point, but they boast a formidable recent record in North London, winning four of their last six top-flight away visits against Spurs. Plus, they will head to the capital on a bit of a high after beating Coventry City 3-1 in the Carabao Cup third round in midweek.
However, there cannot be any excuses made for De Zerbi and his team if they fail to beat the Villans. The players showed fight, spirit and togetherness at Anfield, only for Liverpool’s attacking quality to outdo ours. Should Tottenham play with the same intent, pace, energy and fight, we can beat this Villa side and finally register our first league win of the campaign.
