Former Liverpool defender officially retires aged 35

Former Liverpool defender Amy James Turner, who won four caps for England, has officially announced her retirement from football.

Turner, the 188th player to represent the Lionesses, made her senior debut as a substitute in a 3-0 win over Australia in the Cyprus Cup in March 2015.

She made her first start in England’s next game, a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands, before earning further caps against Estonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Euro 2017 qualifying campaign.

The defender, who was shortlisted for the PFA Women’s Young Player of the Year award in 2015, also represented England at youth level and captained the U23s.

Born in Sheffield, Turner began her career with Doncaster Belles after playing for Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United’s girls’ teams.

She later featured for Leeds United, Lincoln Ladies and Liverpool before joining Manchester United in 2018. She racked up 67 appearances across all competitions for United before leaving in 2021.

Turner signed for Liverpool in 2017 but, due to a persistent knee injury, she did not make her debut until January 2018. She made just six league appearances before leaving the club following the expiration of her contract.

After a spell with Orlando Pride in the United States, Turner returned to England with Tottenham in 2022. The 35-year-old made more than 50 appearances for Spurs before leaving this summer and bringing an impressive career to an end.

Turner posted on her Instagram page: “What dreams were made of ❤️. Thank you football, you’ve given me so much!

“I’m incredibly grateful for the career that I’ve had and the amazing people I’ve met over the years. Here’s to retirement and the next chapter, whatever that may bring!”

The Football Association said in a statement: “The FA will invite Amy to a future England women’s home game to recognise her contribution to English football.”
