Jason Cundy wasn’t especially impressed by Everton when the talkSPORT pundit branded them Premier League “makeweights” earlier this year. Is he ever?
Cundy claimed the Blues “don’t do anything” and simply “hang around” in the Premier League, questioning what the club was actually trying to achieve.
His comments, covered in our original report, inevitably irritated Evertonians. “Makeweights” was the line that stuck (and stung).
There are still plenty of questions about where all of this eventually leads. We have looked at the Friedkins and their football strategy as well as more recent developments around Hill Dickinson Stadium.
But it’s clear from the Toffees’ start to this season that Moyes and co, against a difficult backdrop and with little help from the owners, have begun well if unspectacularly. And most Evertonians appear cool with that.
It’d be nice for this to continue and for Cundy’s rant to end up biting him on the backside. Please.
Cundy finds another target
There was also a reminder on Thursday night that Everton are not alone in attracting Cundy’s ire. This time it was Norwich City.
Watching their 5-0 Carabao Cup defeat at Manchester City, Cundy launched into the Canaries on talkSPORT. Suffice to say, he wasn’t impressed with them either.
Maybe those Evertonians who were annoyed by his “makeweights” rant can feel a little less singled out. Cundy’s scattergun has quite a range. Anyone is capable of being on the receiving end of one of his inarticulate, uneducated rants.
As for Everton, ultimately Moyes and his players will determine whether that old description ages well or badly.
