Cole Palmer has been named in Thomas Tuchel’s upcoming England squad.
Missing out on England’s World Cup squad was a huge blow for Cole Palmer, especially after a frustrating, injury-plagued season at Chelsea where groin and thigh issues hampered his consistency.
Thomas Tuchel ultimately left him out, citing squad harmony, Palmer’s lack of match sharpness, and heavy competition in attacking areas.
But Palmer has hit the ground running this season. Re-energized alongside Morgan Rogers and Joao Pedro, he already has four goals and two assists, playing with the swagger that has forced Tuchel to immediately recall him to the national team.
Looks a promising lineup, but once again shows our frailties in defence. We can play 3, 4, 5 or even 6 and a sweeper keeper at the back. Unfortunately when the average height of the squad is 6ft, how can really defend set pieces
Thomas Tuchel cites Cole Palmer’s improvements for Chelsea
Speaking in his press conference after the squad announcement, Thomas Tuchel revealed that Cole Palmer‘s call-up is down to his improvements with Chelsea this season.
He said: “They had a good start to the season. They never did anything wrong, we just chose different players, but now is a new competition. Some positions, some players have more injuries, some have less injuries. Cole has his starts that he always has, but he has his numbers back, his assists back, his goals back, so that’s why he’s in the squad and I think he has a point to prove.”
Former Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah and Morgan Rogers are the only other two Chelsea-affiliated players to receive a call-up to Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
