‘No hiding place’ – Jamie Carragher sends stern message to Liverpool and Andoni Iraola

Liverpool’s start to the new season under Andoni Iraola has proved to be a mixed bag, to say the least.

The Reds are unbeaten under their new manager but have won just one game in the Premier League in four attempts.

However, they got convincing wins against Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League and Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup, proving that they have a lot of quality in the squad.

And Jamie Carragher believes a handful of Liverpool players have a point to prove after letting Arne Slot down last season.

Jamie Carragher says Liverpool let Arne Slot down

“My initial response after Slot’s sacking was that, in time, there would be a reassessment of his work and recognition of how many factors led to Liverpool’s underperformance,” wrote the former Liverpool defender for The Telegraph.

“He did not deserve to be held solely responsible. That reappraisal will happen quicker than expected without a radical upturn.

“During last weekend’s goalless draw with Fulham, the first murmurings of the Kop’s discontent confirmed what I and many Liverpool supporters anticipated coming into this season.

“Slot proved a useful scapegoat for too many players. There will be no hiding place for them at Anfield if they do not run through a brick wall every week for Iraola.”

To be fair to Carragher, he’s right in saying that a lot of big hitters were below their best last season.

However, the Reds had to make a change at the helm as Slot’s brand of football had gone stale, while results continued to deteriorate since Liverpool’s loss to PSG in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League in 2025.

And it wasn’t just the Dutchman who paid the price as key players like Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate departed the club, while Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes have also moved on.
