Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli became Chelsea’s youngest player of the Premier League era during Friday night’s 3-0 defeat against Brentford.
The 16-year-old midfielder was introduced by Xabi Alonso in the 87th minute at the Gtech Community Stadium, replacing Pedro Neto with Chelsea already chasing the game.
It was a difficult night for the Blues, but Nicoll-Jazuli’s introduction provided a significant moment for one of Cobham’s most highly rated young talents.
The teenager had been named in a competitive first-team matchday squad for the first time before kick-off.

Nicoll-Jazuli also impressed Alonso during Chelsea’s summer preparations.
The midfielder featured throughout pre-season and started against Juventus, competing in midfield against experienced internationals Manuel Locatelli and Douglas Luiz.
Alonso subsequently praised the teenager’s composure and ability to compete against considerably older players.
Chelsea have increasingly involved Nicoll-Jazuli around the senior setup, with his inclusion against Brentford representing the clearest indication yet of his progress.
He had also previously trained with the first team before officially becoming part of Alonso’s pre-season squad.
The circumstances of Nicoll-Jazuli’s competitive debut were far from ideal.
Chelsea were already 2-0 down when he entered, with Jaidon Anthony and Igor Thiago having put Brentford in control.
Fábio Carvalho then added a third during stoppage time as Chelsea suffered their second Premier League defeat of the season.
The result will dominate the immediate discussion around Alonso’s side, but Nicoll-Jazuli’s debut provides one positive development from a disappointing evening.
At just 16, he has now reached the Premier League earlier than any Chelsea player in the competition’s era.
The challenge from here will be ensuring a historic first appearance becomes the beginning rather than the high point of his senior Chelsea career.
