Following a sensational win against Racing Santander in midweek, Barcelona return to action for their final game before the international break as the La Liga leaders face Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán on Saturday night.
The Catalans set a new record on Wednesday with their seventh consecutive win in all competitions to begin the season, a first in club history.
It’s been a spectacular start and the attack is unimaginably good with 28 goals in six games in the league alone, and they’ll be looking for one more win to head into the extended international window in great spirits.
Sevilla will provide a tough test as they always do against Barça at the Pizjuán, and they’re off to a really good start themselves with four wins and just one defeat in their first six games.
New manager Luis García has brought a much more defensive-minded focus, with less possession, more long balls and increased physicality, and it’s worked so far.
The football isn’t exactly great to watch, but the results are good and Sevilla desperately needed good news after fighting relegation until the final day of last season. The only highlight of their 2025-26 campaign was a 4-1 win over Barça at the Pizjuán last October, a defeat that Barça fans, players and coach Hansi Flick haven’t forgotten.
That loss came three days after a painful and deflating defeat to PSG’s B-team in the Champions League, and the manner of the performance in Seville, with a dreadful defensive display and some horrible mistakes in midfield and in front of goal, made their trip to the Pizjuán by far the lowest point of Flick’s second season.
Hansi and his troops are seriously focused on avenging that loss and playing much better on all phases, and the entire team needs to be better on the ball to help protect Wojciech Szczesny, who will replace the injured Joan Garcia in goal.
Sevilla’s gameplan is pretty obvious ahead of the game: they’ll sit back, absorb pressure, and use the pace of their forwards on the counter with long balls. Barça need to be strong on the ball, create and finish their chances early, and manage the game well to not let the Pizjuán crowd, one of the very best in Spain, have an impact on the contest.
