Blackburn Rovers should target Liverpool midfielder in January: Opinion

Blackburn Rovers will get the opportunity to bolster their squad when the January transfer window opens up for business.

Blackburn Rovers are currently sat in 16th place in the Championship table after seven fixtures. Rovers are only three points off the play-offs.

The Lancashire outfit should target a loan move for Liverpool midfielder James McConnell. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the youngster made available for a temporary exit in a few months time to get some more experience and an EFL switch would be ideal for him during the second-half of the season.

McConnell, 22, was linked with Preston North End and Swansea City over the summer, as well with League One side Leicester City, but nothing materialised in the end. He stayed put at Anfield beyond the deadline earlier this month and he made his first appearance of the campaign for Andoni Iraola’s side last time out against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup.

Blackburn Rovers won 3-1 at home against Millwall last time out after goals by Dapo Afolayan (x2) and Andri Gudjohnsen as they bounced back from their 2-1 loss to Sheffield United in style. They are back in action this weekend with an away trip to Portsmouth.

Blackburn Rovers should target loan move for Liverpool midfielder James McConnell in January

Blackburn Rovers have seen the likes of Sondre Tronstad, Lewis Baker and Sidnei Tavares since the end of last term. Rovers could do with some more competition and depth in the middle of the park.

McConnell would give them something different to pick from in that position. In addition, he would inject valuable quality into their squad.

The England youth international has been on the books of Liverpool since joining them in 2019 from Sunderland. He is under contract with the Merseyside giants until June 2030 meaning he still has four years left to run down on his deal.

McConnell has played 14 matches for the Reds’ first-team so far in his career. He was loaned out to Ajax last year and went on to feature on seven occasions during his time in Amsterdam.

The Verdict: Liverpool midfielder James McConnell would be ideal loan addition for Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn Rovers should have a good relationship with Liverpool after they took Harvey Elliott on loan back in 2020. Rovers would be an ideal destination for McConnell and would be able to offer him the regular football that he needs right now.

He is unlikely to get many opportunities with the Reds right now, especially in the league. Therefore, a departure would enable him to get some more much needed exposure to men’s football.
