A theory has emerged that Xabi Alonso was sending a message to the Chelsea board

Joe Cole has suggested that Xabi Alonso sent a pointed message to the Chelsea board by introducing 16‑year‑old Mahdi Nicoll‑Jazuli while the team trailed 2‑0 at Brentford on Friday night. The Bees tore Chelsea apart in the second half at the Gtech Community Stadium, with three goals after the break sealing a fully deserved win.
Alonso's decision to introduce Nicoll‑Jazuli raised eyebrows at a moment when Chelsea were still chasing the game. The 16‑year‑old replaced Valentin Barco in the 87th minute, making his Premier League debut in tough circumstances with the Blues already two goals down.
Alonso turned to the teenager instead of senior options like Romeo Lavia in a late attempt to spark a comeback, before Fabio Carvalho's injury‑time strike killed the game. Pundits have since offered their own interpretation of the substitution.
Former Blues winger Cole believes the move was a calculated message from a visibly frustrated manager.
"Xabi Alonso is sending a message to the board saying we have not got enough, and I’m putting a 16-year-old kid into midfield when we are chasing a game away to our rivals," Cole told Premier League Productions.
"That was clear as day for me. And the way he walked off at the end, I think he is furious with that."
Former Premier League striker Glenn Murray also pointed out that Alonso has been forced to use full‑backs like Reece James and Malo Gusto in central areas. Against Brentford, a 36‑year‑old Jordan Henderson partnered summer arrival Valentin Barco.
"I think when Xabi Alonso brings on the young boy Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli at 16 when you’re 2-0 down, that is a message to the board that you don’t have enough in midfield with Santos and Fernandez leaving in the transfer window," Murray added.
"It’s a big blind spot for them, they have had right-backs playing in the centre of midfield on a few occasions, today they have two natural midfielders in but bringing the 16-year-old was a big message."

Despite making 11 summer signings, Chelsea have been left short in midfield, with only Barco and Jordan Henderson available as central options. Lavia was on the bench, but Alonso chose Nicoll‑Jazuli for the 'energy' he brings.
"We brought Mahdi because he has great energy and in the middle we were short on numbers," Alonso said after the match.
Chelsea will now be out of action for three weeks during the extended September and October international break. They will return to face Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge on October 10 (3pm).
