Liverpool hero Vladimir Smicer believes that Alexis Mac Allister should be handed a new contract at the club, amid uncertainty over the midfielder's future.
It follows the 27-year-old publicly discussing his own future, as he enters the final two years of his deal at Anfield, with no clarity as of yet about whether an extension could be on the cards or not. Mac Allister currently has just less than two years left on his contract with the Reds, as it runs until 2028, with some teams seemingly taking notice of that in the transfer market.
Reports over the summer claimed there was interest from Manchester City and Real Madrid, with both teams searching for midfield additions at the time, but a move from either team never ended up materializing.
After staying, Mac Allister recently admitted that he was upset by the lack of progress surrounding a new contract, with the Reds having already sealed the futures of Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch in the past year.
In response, the Argentinian international has shown his quality on the pitch. While he struggled last season, early signs this campaign suggest he is back to his best, having scored important goals against Atletico Madrid and Tottenham in recent weeks.
With debate raging over whether Liverpool should offer the midfielder a new deal, former star Smicer has claimed that a contract extension would make sense.

Speaking to Liverpool.com, with Grosvenor Sport, the Reds hero said: "Alexis Mac Allister has been at the club for three years, and he played a big part in the success we had.
"His first year was tremendous at Liverpool. Really good. Then he won the title under Arne Slot. He has slowed down a little bit since then, but I think he’s very important for keeping the balance of the team.
"I like him as a player a lot. He’s only 27. The best years are ahead of him, especially as a midfielder. He’s got all that experience, and he plays so smart, always making the right decisions in the right positions, and he is a quality player. I think he should be in the starting line up so I would give him a contract."
It remains to be seen whether the Liverpool hierarchy will decide on giving the star a new deal, or if it will decide to leave it for later while looking elsewhere in the midfield market.
So far, however, Mac Allister has earned the trust of Andoni Iraola. The manager has been regularly starting him in a midfield trio that contains Szoboszlai and Florian Wirtz, benching Gravenberch in the process.
While the manager has faith in the midfielder, and he has committed himself to the club, there is still uncertainty over whether that will be matched with a new contract.
