Jason Cundy does not think much ofEverton. We know that by now.
The talkSPORT ‘presenter/shock jock’ has been at it again, this time describing Everton as the “worst club to support” and claiming they have become “insignificant”.
It is hardly new. Cundy recently described Everton as Premier League “makeweights” and questioned what the club actually does beyond staying in the division.
Tony Bellew (thankfully) was never likely to let the latest comments pass.
The former world champion and lifelong Blue pointed to Everton’s nine league titles, the Hill Dickinson and the support that continues to fill it. His final message was straightforward: “Everton will rise again.”
Everton have heard it all before
Evertonians can argue the toss over Cundy’s comments if they want. Plenty already have.
The club’s history hardly needs another airing. Nine league titles, five FA Cups and a European Cup Winners’ Cup are in the record books and will remain there, whatever is said on talkSPORT. Recent history is rather less impressive.
Everton’s last major trophy was the FA Cup in 1995. Since then there have been a few decent sides, the odd European adventure and, more recently, far too many seasons spent looking nervously towards the bottom of the Premier League.
Nobody needs reminding of any of that either. So perhaps the answer to Cundy is not really an answer at all.
His raison d’etre is to provoke debate, and he does so in the most crude, unintelligent, and basic way. That I’m writing a column about him, I guess, proves the point he does so successfully.
Everton have the Hill Dickinson, Moyes has them moving in the right direction again, and there are finally a few signs of a football club looking forwards rather than constantly dealing with another problem.
Now the tricky bit. Beat Ipswich. Keep winning games. Stay in the cup. Give people something worth talking about.
If Everton can do that often enough, what Jason Cundy thinks about them becomes meaningless.
