Harry Kane has revealed that he would have loved to share a football pitch with one of England’s greatest-ever players after an extraordinary season put the Bayern Munich striker into the Ballon d’Or conversation.
The England captain enjoyed the most prolific campaign of his career in 2025/26, producing numbers that placed him among the most productive players in European football history.
Kane scored 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern Munich across all competitions, adding seven assists as he helped the German giants win the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal.
His league campaign was particularly impressive.
The striker scored 36 goals in 31 Bundesliga appearances, winning the European Golden Shoe in the process.
He also scored 14 times in the Champions League and added another 10 goals in the DFB-Pokal.
Including his goals for England, Kane finished the campaign with 73 goals.
Only Lionel Messi, who scored 82 goals in the 2011/12 season, has produced more in a campaign among players from Europe’s top five leagues.
Naturally, that form has placed Kane firmly into the Ballon d’Or discussion, with the 2026 winner set to be announced on October 26.
And one of the biggest names in English football believes Kane deserves to be in that conversation.
The former England international sent Kane a message through TNT Sports, describing him as a world-class forward and admitting he was disappointed that they never had the opportunity to play together.
He also praised Kane’s character away from football, highlighting his reputation as a family man before telling him that his Ballon d’Or recognition was long overdue.
Only then did Kane reveal exactly who had delivered the message.
It was Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.
“Harry, Stevie G here, I just want to say that I’m absolutely devastated that I never got the chance to share a football pitch with you.”
“I’ve admired you from afar from a long time,” the former Liverpool captain said.
“You’re a world-class forward. I’ve loved every minute of watching you.”
“As I say, I’m devastated I never got the chance to share a football pitch with you.”
“I would have loved to try and set you up for even more goals.”
Kane responded by describing Gerrard as one of England’s greatest-ever players and arguably one of the best midfielders the country has produced.
But his praise went even further.
Kane explained that he had watched Gerrard while growing up and had heard plenty from England teammates about the midfielder’s training, passing, shooting and ability to influence every part of the pitch.
There was also one obvious regret.
“Stevie, thank you very much,” Kane responded.
“Yeah, that is a shame.”
“We didn’t play together.”
“I mean, Stevie’s one of the best midfielders ever.”
“And just like the same thing when I hear about people talking about him.
“Obviously I watched him growing up, you know, see what he could do.”
“But I think when you’re in it, you see it different.”
“Like when you see him train every day, and some of the England lads would speak about the way he trained and the way he hit the ball and the way he passed, and, you know, he was a total team player, up and down the pitch.”
“Stevie’s one of England’s greatest ever players, one of the best midfielders definitely we’ve ever produced, but I think in the world as well.”
“So that would have been a nice one to play with him.”
“I’m sure I would have scored a few more goals.”
For Kane, the admiration is clear.
And given the extraordinary numbers he has produced this season, Gerrard’s message arrived at a significant moment as the striker continues to receive recognition among the world’s elite.
