Lewis Koumas:“I want to kick on” after Liverpool breakthrough

Liverpool

Lewis Koumas gave Liverpool fans some feel-good news on Tuesday night, picking up his first man of the match award with a hard-working display against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup. The 20-year-old forward showed real hunger and energy throughout, and it capped off a big week for him at Anfield.

A big night for Lewis Koumas at Anfield

Liverpool beat Tottenham 3-1 at home, and Koumas put in serious defensive effort even without the ball. He closed down defenders repeatedly and made space for his teammates to attack freely. As reported by The Guardian, his pressing was just what Andoni Iraola had asked from his forwards. The head coach wanted more energy after a flat draw in the Premier League against Fulham last weekend.

Koumas answered that call with a strong all-round display on the night, and came close to scoring himself in the first half. His constant movement stretched the Tottenham defence and helped the Reds create clear chances throughout the match. That combination of pressing, running the channels, and nearly getting on the scoresheet summed up why Iraola picked him for such a big game.

Iraola shows trust in a rising young talent

Iraola made his intentions clear within his first few weeks at the club, letting former sporting director Richard Hughes know that Koumas belonged in the senior squad rather than out on loan again. A confident run through pre-season in the United States had already shown the head coach what the forward could offer.

Koumas has since played in both the Premier League and the Champions League for Liverpool. After the win, Iraola praised his daily habits at the club, saying,“His energy is contagious,” and adding that Koumas always knows what the team needs from him. Koumas also spoke about his role, explaining that his job is often about work off the ball rather than chasing goals alone. That attitude fits neatly within Iraola’s fast style of football at Liverpool.

His movement between the lines helps break up rigid defensive shapes, and rather than staying high and wide like a typical winger, he often drops deep to link play through midfield. That small tactical habit gives Liverpool an extra passing option whenever teams sit back and defend deep.

From loan spells to first team chances

It was Jurgen Klopp who gave Koumas his debut over two years ago, and he scored on his full debut in a 3-0 FA Cup win over Southampton. He then dropped out of the picture at Liverpool until Iraola arrived, going on loan to Stoke for 2024-25, then Birmingham for half of last season, and finally Hull.

“The reason for going out on loan was to prepare for this moment,”Koumas said. He has also won twelve caps for Wales already, adding to his growing list of honours. As a boy, he grew up watching England striker Michael Owen and Wales legend Gareth Bale. Koumas says his hunger simply comes from wanting to play for the club he grew up supporting.“I always had the drive that I would get here,” he said.

He turns twenty one this weekend, just before Liverpool travel across the country to face Bournemouth. The forward now hopes to build on this display rather than treat it as a single moment.
