Football has once again offered a harsh reminder of how quickly a promising moment can turn into another setback.
A Liverpool defender was forced off with an injury during the club’s Premier League 2 meeting with Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, just days after receiving his first senior international call-up for Zimbabwe.
The timing is particularly unfortunate given the significance of the latest development in his career.
After spending much of the past few seasons battling injuries and fighting his way back to full fitness, the defender had finally been handed an opportunity to represent his country at senior level.
Liverpool confirmed he was named in Rob Page’s starting XI for the Brighton clash at the Kirkby Academy, with the youngster lining up at right-back.
Reputable independent academy journalist Lewis Bower was among those to report the injury, describing the situation as another cruel moment for a player whose progress has repeatedly been interrupted by fitness problems.
21-year-old Isaac Mabaya had only recently received his first senior Zimbabwe call-up for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
His inclusion followed his return to regular competitive football after a lengthy rehabilitation programme.
Mabaya’s latest international recognition represents a significant moment in a career that has been heavily disrupted by injuries.
The Liverpool academy graduate first attracted wider attention during the club’s 2022 pre-season tour, but his 2022/23 campaign was subsequently cut short by a serious ankle injury in October 2022.
He suffered another setback in April 2024 when, after returning to Liverpool’s U21 side, he lasted only a few minutes against Manchester United before being forced off with a suspected hamstring problem.
At the time, it was only his fifth appearance in 18 months.
His most serious setback came in August 2025.
Having joined Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan to gain senior experience, Mabaya made his first competitive start against Notts County in the Carabao Cup.
After just 29 minutes, he was stretchered from the pitch with a serious lower-leg injury.
That injury was later reported as a ruptured Achilles tendon, ending his loan spell and beginning another lengthy period of rehabilitation.
Mabaya finally returned to competitive action during the 2026/27 campaign, making several appearances for Liverpool U21s.
Before Saturday’s fixture, he had played 90 minutes against both Leeds United U21 and West Ham United U21, while also featuring against Everton.
His return had coincided with another important step forward: Liverpool included him in their senior Premier League and Champions League squads, while Zimbabwe handed him the chance to begin a new chapter at international level.
The extent of Saturday’s injury is not yet clear.
For Mabaya, Liverpool and Zimbabwe, the hope will be that another interruption to his long-awaited progress is only a minor one.
Football is cruel. Isaac Mabaya subbed off with injury after previous torrid time with injury in same week of receiving first Zimbabwe call-up. Hopefully it’s nothing serious.
