Jordan Pickford wasEverton‘s top pick as Thierno Barry’s early goal secured a 1-0 victory over Ipswich at the Hill Dickinson.
Barry struck after 11 minutes and later had another ruled out, but Everton needed Pickford several times before Abdul Fatawu’s second yellow card left Ipswich with 10 men.
Here are our Everton player ratings.
Everton player ratings
Jordan Pickford – 8
Had more to do than Moyes would have wanted. Saved from Emersonn and Julio Enciso and rescued Branthwaite after the defender gave the ball away to Fatawu. Four saves and a clean sheet. Everton’s best player.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 6
Little fuss either way. Did his job at right-back and lasted until stoppage time.
James Tarkowski – 7
His long-range effort was heading wide before Barry supplied the touch for the winner. Defended well enough on an afternoon when Ipswich caused Everton problems for long periods.
Jarrad Branthwaite – 6
Nearly gifted Ipswich an equaliser with a poor pass, with Pickford getting him out of trouble. Otherwise considerably better and part of another clean sheet.
Vitalii Mykolenko – 6
Booked after 42 minutes, which left him needing to be careful for the remainder. Got through it without further drama.
James Garner – 7
Plenty of work in midfield and forced a save from Christian Walton. It was his challenge on Fatawu that ended with the Ipswich winger receiving a second yellow for simulation.
Harrison Armstrong – 6.5
Back after missing the Wolves game and started well, sending Johnson through for an early chance. Should have used Dewsbury-Hall during a promising late break rather than going for goal himself.
Brennan Johnson – 6
Had a chance before Barry scored but never really took hold of the game. His offside position and proximity to Walton resulted in Barry’s second-half header being disallowed after the VAR review.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall – 7
Delivered the corner from which Barry thought he had scored his second and was regularly available when Everton tried to move forward. Another decent afternoon without everything coming off.
Jack Grealish – 6
Quiet by the standards he has set since joining Everton. There were flashes but not enough, and Tyrique George replaced him with 11 minutes remaining.
Thierno Barry – 8
In the right place for Tarkowski’s shot and supplied the touch that won the game. Headed another in after the break only for Johnson’s offside to wipe it out. Five goals for the season now.
Everton substitutes
Tyler Dibling – 6
Replaced Johnson after 66 minutes. Never quite found the openings he enjoyed against Wolves in midweek.
Tyrique George – 6
On for Grealish after 79 minutes. Everton were already playing against 10 men and his main job was helping them get the result over the line.
Hayden Hackney – N/A
Replaced Dewsbury-Hall in stoppage time.
Jake O’Brien – N/A
Stoppage-time replacement for Maitland-Niles.
Man of the match: Jordan Pickford – 8
Barry won it. Pickford made sure Everton stayed in front.
