Ipswich Town suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium, decided by Thierno Barry’s early deflected goal. Missed chances, a VAR intervention, and a red card for Abdul Fatawu also defined the match. Ipswich played with determination, created opportunities, and pressed late on despite being down to ten men, but couldn’t find the equaliser their performance arguably merited. Here are four reflections from the afternoon.
1. A Fortunate Early Goal Left Town Chasing
Everton’s early lead owed much to fortune: a long-range shot deflected off Barry, wrong-footing Christian Walton. From then on, Ipswich had to chase the match. Both teams created significant chances in the first half, with Abdul Fatawu twice forcing strong saves from Jordan Pickford, and Leif Davis missing a clear opening at the far post.
At the same time, Brennan Johnson and Barry missed presentable opportunities for Everton. The match could easily have been level at the break.
2. Walton and Ouattara Stepped Up When Called Upon
Christian Walton, who was making his first league appearance of the season, delivered a steady and composed performance. He handled Everton’s crosses well, made important stops from Barry and Dibling, and kept Town in the game during periods of pressure.
Abdoul Ouattara, who made his full Premier League debut at right-back, also impressed. He defended aggressively, supported attacks down the right and showed confidence on the ball. Both players justified their selection and added depth to O’Neil’s options.
3. VAR Intervention Was a Major Turning Point
Everton believed they had doubled their lead when Barry headed in from a corner, only for the Video Assistant Referee to rule the goal out because of Brennan Johnson, being in an offside position and interfering with Christian Walton. That decision did keep Ipswich alive and briefly shifted momentum back towards them. In previous seasons, that goal almost certainly stands.
Instead, Town remained within one strike of a point and continued to push forward until the red card changed the dynamic.
4. Fatawu’s Red Card Left Town With Too Much To Do
The other decisive moment arrived when Fatawu was dismissed for a second yellow card with just over 20 minutes remaining. Up to that point, Ipswich were competitive and still threatening an equaliser. Reduced to ten men, they were forced deeper as Everton created a series of chances but continued to waste them.
Despite the disadvantage, Town rallied late: Zian Flemming sent a difficult chance over the bar and Issa Diop saw a powerful effort blocked in stoppage time. The effort was there, but the dismissal ultimately left Town with too much to overcome.
