Omar Cooper Jr., the 30th overall pick in this year’s draft, will miss some time. During the New York Jets Week 1 win over the Tennessee Titans, the rookie wide receiver suffered an ankle injury during the game’s opening drive. The injury was eventually ruled a high ankle sprain & the Jets rookie missed the remainder of the game. The injury forces Omar Cooper Jr. to be placed on Injured Reserve, officially ruling him out for the next four games. It was an unfortunate bump in the road for the beginning of the Indiana Hoosier’s start of his NFL career.

Thankfully, if all goes well for his recovery, Omar Cooper Jr. would be eligible to return as soon as Week 5. If that’s the case, Cooper Jr. could be back just in time for the Jets road trip up north in an AFC East matchup with the reigning AFC Conference Champion New England Patriots on Sunday, October 18th. However, the team still has to manage replacing his production over the next four games.

Entering the 2026 offseason, New York Jets general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn understood that a major problem from 2025 needed course correction. The Jets passing game had to become more dynamic and efficient. Helmed by the quarterback trio of Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, and Brady Cook, the Jets passing offense looked anemic. Especially after losing star wide receiver Garrett Wilson for 10 games last season due to a knee injury. Throughout the 2025 season, the New York Jets finished with a league-worst 2,385 total passing yards, while averaging only 140.3 passing yards per game.

Understanding the severity of this, the Jets acted quickly. During the coaching staff overhaul, New York hired former Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich to become the offensive coordinator. Reich returned to the NFL after a three year absence, when he was fired midseason during his lone year as Carolina Panthers head coach in 2023. The longtime NFL coach returned to the league after serving as the interim head coach at Stanford last season.

Along with Reich, New York reunited with former starting quarterback Geno Smith, acquiring him from the Las Vegas Raiders via trade in March. It’s the first time Geno Smith has played for the Jets in 10 years, before revitalizing his career thanks to his tenure with the Seattle Seahawks. Entering his 14th season in the league, New York expected Smith to be a guiding veteran presence under center while helping to help drive the ball down the field.

But the Jets also used the draft to help improve as well. After using the second overall pick on Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey, New York recognized that the need for offense was still prevalent. As a result, Darren Mougey used his next two draft picks to add some weapons for Geno Smith to target. Using the 16th overall pick they acquired from the Indianapolis Colts via the blockbuster trade sending cornerback Ahmad ‘Sauce’ Gardner to Indianapolis, the Jets selected Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq.

Sadiq was coming off a great season at Oregon, leading the Ducks in both receptions(51) and receiving touchdowns (eight), along with 560 receiving yards through 14 games, becoming a second-team All-American in the process. Sadiq demonstrated great versatility last season, lining up in multiple formations, including in the slot and even in the backfield. He demonstrated such versatility during the Jets 23-10 victory over the Titans in Week 1. Sadiq finished his NFL debut with three receptions for 21 yards, but more importantly, he earned the Jets first touchdown of the season on a three-yard run in the opening drive.

However, Sadiq wasn’t the only offensive weapon the Jets got in the first round. After trading up to acquire the 30th overall pick, the Jets drafted Indiana wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. Cooper Jr. spent all four seasons at Indiana, but began to shine after the hiring of head coach Curt Cignetti. During his final two seasons, Cooper Jr. finished with 97 catches for 1,531 yards and 20 touchdowns through 39 games.

Omar Cooper Jr. was an important piece of the Hoosiers offense, becoming a favorite target for eventual Heisman Winner Fernando Mendoza. Cooper Jr.’s efforts helped the Hoosiers to an undefeated 16-0 record, helping Indiana win their first National Championship in school history after defeating Miami in a thrilling 27-21 victory in the National Championship game.

Omar Cooper Jr. made a great first impression in his NFL debut. His shining moment came during the opening drive. On third-and-nine, the Jets were on the Titans’ 34-yard line. Geno Smith snapped the ball and found Cooper Jr. on a short route at the 30-yard line. That’s when Cooper Jr. evaded two tacklers and made it all the way down inside the goal line, being brought down inside the Titans’ five-yard line. Unfortunately, that was the only highlight Cooper Jr. was able to provide, for it was on this play that he suffered the ankle sprain that forced him to miss the remainder of the game.

Who will get the ball during Omar Cooper Jr.’s absence?

The fortunate thing for the Jets is that Omar Cooper Jr. is not lost for the season. With luck, the rookie wide receiver should recover in time for the Jets matchup with the New England Patriots in Gillette Stadium on October 18th. However, the Jets will still have to manage his absence for at least the next four games.

According to the schedule, the Jets will play the Green Bay Packers in their 2026 home debut at MetLife Stadium tomorrow afternoon. Afterwards, the Jets are on the road the next two weeks in matchups with the Detroit Lions on September 27th and face the Chicago Bears on October 4th, before returning to MetLife Stadium to face the Cleveland Browns on October 11th. It would be fortunate if New York can finish 3-1 or go 2-2 during Omar Cooper Jr.’s absence. But who will benefit from the available targets?

rookie linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. was tabbed to start in his place. His performance that followed in his first regular-season NFL game was one of the few things that left Titans fans walking away with hope after their loss to the New York Jets.

Most likely, the two immediate beneficiaries will be wide receiver Adonai Mitchell and tight end Kenyon Sadiq. Third-year wide receiver Adonai Mitchell has had rave reviews all throughout training camp for the strides he made. He got to showcase that talent in Week 1, finishing second on the team in receiving yards with 60 on three targets, including a remarkable 40-yard catch on a deep ball from Geno Smith.

Meanwhile, the rookie Kenyon Sadiq should have more opportunities to impress as he ramps up his workload. After spending training camp recovering from Hernia surgery, New York will look to increase his targets as well. The 6’3″, 241-lb rookie has the size and speed to be a matchup nightmare for most safeties and linebackers.

In addition, despite his lackluster debut (two receptions for negative two receiving yards), second-year tight end Mason Taylor should get more targets. Despite his Week 1 struggles, the 6’5, 255lb tight end finished 2025 as the team’s leader in targets and catches.

The Last Word

Losing a talented rookie like wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. is a tough blow for the New York Jets offense. Especially when he flashed his potential during the season-opening drive last week. Thankfully, the 30th overall pick should be able to return before Halloween.

It will be an adjustment for the team as they face a tough schedule between tomorrow’s matchup with the Green Bay Packers and two rough road games against the Detroit Lions and Chicago Bears within this four-game stretch. But if Geno Smith can continue to involve Garrett Wilson and the other young playmakers, as well as rely on the running game led by star running back Breece Hall, the Jets can make it through Cooper Jr’s recovery while playing competitive football.
