Washington Commanders wide receiver Stefon Diggs got some brutal news from the NFL just one day prior to week 2 kicking off. Diggs has reportedly received a rather large punishment from the league for a decision he made during week one’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Stefon Diggs Slapped With Huge Punishment From The League
One of the more notable fines from week one is Washington Commanders wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who was fined for unsportsmanlike conduct following his touchdown celebration against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Diggs scored his first touchdown as a member of the Commanders in the fourth quarter Sunday. After reaching the end zone, he jumped onto the goal post and wrapped his legs around it.
Officials immediately flagged Diggs for the celebration, resulting in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The 15-yard penalty prevented Washington from attempting a two-point conversion, and the Commanders ultimately fell to Philadelphia, 24-22.
Diggs acknowledged after the game that he made a mistake and said he simply forgot that the celebration was no longer allowed under the NFL’s current rules.
“As soon as I wrapped my arms around it, I was like … ‘Oh, I forgot.’ It’s not back in the day,” Diggs said. “I’ve been playing for a long time. You used to [be able to] do that … I’ve got to be better.”
The league fined Diggs $14,926, which is the standard fine for a first unsportsmanlike conduct offense of that type. A second violation would increase the fine to $20,897. Here is a video of the play:

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs received the largest fine of the week. Gibbs was fined $23,027 for improper use of the helmet after lowering his helmet into the chest of New Orleans Saints cornerback Quincey Riley during a touchdown run.
The incident occurred on Gibbs’ second rushing touchdown of the game early in the third quarter. He was not penalized on the field, but the league later reviewed the play and issued the fine. With the first round of fines now announced, more players around the league will likely be looking to avoid costly penalties as Week 2 approaches.
