The Houston Texans have another enticing matchup to start the season, this time against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2. This is a game that the Texans need to find a way to win to avoid beginning the season 0-2 for a second straight year.

After a disappointing 36-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 1, the task doesn’t get easier on defense with quarterback Joe Burrow and the talented Bengals offense. That also means the Texans offense will need to be on top of their game.

Unfortunately for the Texans, there are a couple of key injuries that greatly affect the game. Houston will have to find a way to overcome some big absences in Week 2.

The status of wide receiver Nico Collins had been tracked the entire week, and his hamstring had flared up during Wednesday’s practice, where he was limited. Collins did not practice on Thursday or Friday after being diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring strain, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2. He was officially deemed out on Friday’s injury report.

That is a big blow to the offense and quarterback C.J. Stroud. Collins was the top target in Week 1 with seven catches for 75 yards and one touchdown. Given the new look of the receiving group, with no Jayden Higgins as he’s out for the year and Tank Dell currently on IR, depth is lacking.

Jaylin Noel and Kayshon Boutte will have big roles to fill, and it was reported by Jonathan Alexander of the Houston Chronicle that rookie sixth-round receiver Lewis Bond has been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster. Bond had a great camp and preseason, and it will be interesting to see what his involvement will be.

Collins has dealt with various injuries throughout his career, but the hope is that he won’t miss too much time with this, as it could’ve been worse. His status for Week 3 is up in the air, per Wilson.

More Key Players on Texans Injury Report

Additionally, starting right guard Ed Ingram appeared on the injury report towards the end of the week with a groin injury. He injured it on Thursday and did not practice on Friday. This could sideline him for at least two weeks, per Wilson.

Veteran guard and former All-Pro Wyatt Teller will take his place, and the Texans signed him to a two-year, $16 million deal this offseason. While he didn’t have the best training camp, this is his opportunity to bounce back in the starting lineup.

Additionally, veteran defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is also out for the game due to a knee injury. He did not practice all week. Linebacker Jake Hummel is out due to a groin injury and didn’t practice all week. However, rookie fourth-round linebacker Wade Woodaz is good to go after recovering from this thumb.

The Last Word

Woodaz and fellow rookie linebacker Aiden Fisher will have big roles in this game with Henry To’o To’o on injured reserve. The Texans had already struggled with generating pressure against the Bills, and without Clowney, who got a sack last week, that becomes more difficult. Veteran Dominique Robinson and rookie Sebastian Harsh will have bigger roles.

Houston is just a 2.5-point favorite, but adjustments and depth will be tested due to the Texans’ injury report. Teller will also need to be effective for Houston to run the ball. The passing game took a huge hit with no Collins. If the Texans can run the ball with David Montgomery and Woody Marks, that can help negate the injured receiving unit.
