Sunderland v Arsenal Premier League Manager Mikel Arteta of Arsenal speaks to TNT Sports pre-match during the Premier League match at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland 12 09 2026
Arsenal began the 2026/27 season in impressive style, winning all seven fixtures in all competitions, including a dominant 3-0 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield. Mikel Arteta’s team travelled to Brighton full of confidence, looking to enter the international break with their 100% record intact. However, the in-form Brighton side fully deserved their 3-0 win against Arteta’s side. After the surprise defeat, the Gunners boss spoke to the media, revealing his honest feelings on the game, and answering a question about how he sees the long-term future of the Declan Rice and Bruno Guimaraes midfield partnership.
Arsenal Suffer Humbling 3-0 Loss Against Brighton
Mikel Arteta Reflects on Surprise Defeat
Brighton settled the better of the two teams, with Arsenal unusually unsure in possession. The Seagulls got their deserved lead when Pascal Gross fired in a well-placed shot from outside the box that went in off the post.
An impressive move from Brighton saw Charalampos Kostoulas receive the ball at the edge of the box, before turning and firing home an arrow-like shot, to make it 2-0. The cherry on top came for Brighton when Chema Andres scored following a dangerous inswinging corner.
Kai Havertz found himself through one-on-one, but Bart Verbruggen saved smartly. The Seagulls deserved the win and were the better team from the first whistle. They won the vast majority of first and second balls, with Arsenal unable to deal with the intensity, leaving Mikel Arteta plenty to ponder after the game.

Arteta Reveals Immediate Feelings After the Game
Following the 3-0 defeat against Brighton, Arteta gave his honest feelings on the game:
“Extremely disappointed. But first I think we have to congratulate Brighton for the victory. I think they deserve it, I think they were the better team. From our side, there were certain basics you need to accomplish in football, especially in the Premier League that we were very far from. Winning the first duel, the second ball, that put to the game, especially how direct they were in a really difficult place for us.
“On top of that, especially in our own half, we didn’t respect any of the principles of play to get out of that man-to-man situation. That puts us on the back foot, so it was very difficult to control the game. When we had moments of dominance and control, we did open them up, but we didn’t finish those actions with the quality that is required to compensate for the things we did wrong. So overall, they deserved to win the game, and it’s a big lesson for us.”

Arteta Admits Problems Were Clear ‘From the First Throw-In’
Watching the game, it felt like Arsenal were off the pace from the first whistle, and during his post-match presser, Arteta discussed that feeling:
“You could see from the first throw-in; it was so clear. We put ourselves in trouble one, two, three times. We need to get out much quicker than that, and that’s one of the biggest lessons we have to take from the game today.”
When asked if he was tempted to make subs at half-time, Arteta said:
“I was, but I believed it wasn’t the right moment to do that with the things we wanted to do in the second half, and that decision was made.”
Declan Rice and Bruno Guimaraes
Mikel Arteta was asked in the post-match presser if he sees Declan Rice and Bruno Guimaraes as a long-term midfield duo, and the Gunners gaffer gave his honest response:
“It’s one of them, and it worked extremely well when we played Sunderland away and managed to win the game, and today it didn’t work so well for a lot of things that happened behind them as well to make sure they could play a completely different game. It’s something that will for sure evolve, they’ve only played together a few minutes in these early stages, and that relationship will for sure improve and give us a lot of joy.”
The Last Word
After five games last season, Arsenal had 10 points, and after five games this season, they have 12, so there is no need to panic. It was a flat performance from a team that has shown incredible toughness over the last 12 months. Brighton have started their season well, and have the capabilities to trouble any team this season.
One defeat should not worry Arsenal fans; however, the manner of the loss cannot be repeated. They were second to almost every ball, and Arteta’s men will need to put in a better performance after the international break against Leeds on October 10.
