Emile Heskey has urged Alexis Mac Allister to demonstrate through his performances that he warrants a fresh Liverpool contract, following the midfielder's admission last week that he felt disappointed at not receiving an offer of new terms.

‌

Mac Allister arrived in the summer of 2023 alongside Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai, but has seen both teammates sign extended deals earlier this year, while the club has yet to approach him regarding his own situation.

‌

Speaking ahead of last week's 2-1 triumph over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League — a match in which Mac Allister netted the crucial second goal — the Argentina international acknowledged there had been chances to depart Liverpool during the summer and expressed his frustration at the absence of a contract proposal.

However, Heskey, who turned out 223 times for the Reds between 2000 and 2004, insists Mac Allister needs to prove through his displays on the pitch that he merits renewed contract discussions with the Anfield decision-makers.

"Alexis Mac Allister has had to step up on the pitch because it wasn't great before that," Heskey told PariuriX.

"You can talk, but you've got to put some action in play as well.

"He's a fantastically talented player, we've seen it, but we didn't get to see it last season at Liverpool.

"We saw it at the World Cup, but for Liverpool, we didn't see it last season, so instead of him complaining about a new contract, go and show you deserve it through performances and the contract will come.

‌

"That will come because when you start putting up numbers, and unfortunately, it's a numbers game now, Liverpool will be forced to look around and say no one can compete with these numbers.

"They will look around and say no one else who's younger is giving me that, so let's give another year or let's give another two years or whatever it may be that he wanted.

"You can complain, but you've gotta go and do it as well."

Mac Allister is set to feature from the off when Liverpool travels to Bournemouth on Sunday.

The Reds are ninth in the Premier League table, having picked up six points from their first four games.

The Cheeries are hovering just above the drop zone after failing to win any of their first four Premier League matches this term.
