Newcastle United supporters let Alexander Isak know exactly how they feel when he returned to St James’ Park last month.
Alexander Isak has claimed he holds no regrets at leaving Newcastle United to join Liverpool.
That is despite suffering several injury woes, struggling to find the net and destroying his legacy on Tyneside. The Swede was worshipped at the Magpies before he downed tools to force a Liverpool exit.
While his comments since the move suggest otherwise, actions speak louder than words and Isak was clearly affected on the opening day of the season. Newcastle fans let the striker know exactly how they felt on his return to St James’ Park.
If he did not already know, from the moment he arrived in the city the night before, Isak became fully aware that his Toon legacy lies in tatters. Fans greeted the 26-year-old at Liverpool’s team hotel - with the abuse continuing when their bus pulled up at the stadium on matchday.
A wasteful performance culminated in Isak bottling a last-minute penalty to level the game. Almost one month on, the 26-year-old has finally found his tongue to suggest he does not regret leaving Newcastle.
Alexander Isak has no regrets
"No, never,” Isak told the BBC when asked if he has any doubts. “I would never think like that. Liverpool is a massive club and everything about the club made it pretty clear. The club’s ambition and the club’s will to get me in as well. It was a big part of it.
“(The leg break) was tough. Anyone who had a long injury would know. But on the other hand, when you're in a good place and when you feel good, you don't really tend to look back because it doesn't really benefit you. So I'm just looking forward, feeling really optimistic, excited about the season and what it can bring to us."
‘Trophies and goals’ - Alexander Isak
Isak has also opened up about Andoni Iraola’s style and his wish to score as many goals as possible. He added: “I think that's (Iraola’s style) what the team needs. It's not just about getting the ball to me, it's about getting the ball forward and to all of the offensive players quickly.
“That will benefit the team. I think if we can do that then we should score more goals. Everyone knows that success for this club is winning trophies. I want to score every game. Everyone is different. Some like to set targets and some don't. I'm the one who doesn't."
